Emotional Regulation
Emotional awareness and regulation is an integral part of life at Burnside. There are many ways that we support the children in managing their emotions.
Zones of Regulation
Zones of Regulation are an integral part of our Emotional Regulation and Relationships policy. It is the language that we use for children to describe their feelings and know what to do next. Zones of Regulation are displayed in every class and a 'check-in' system is available to every child daily.
Soft Landings
We recognise that some children need a little longer to regulate. With this in mind, soft landings are facilitated at key points across the day for those who need it. This is an opportunity for children to regulate for a little longer than peers, often outside of the classroom environment.
Emotional Regulation
Key points have been identified across the day for each class to participate in regulation activities. This may be any activities suits the needs of the cohort from mindfulness colouring to pool noodle drumming!
Calm Spaces
Calm spaces are available to the children in every classroom and there are also additional spaces in the KS2 corridor and Y1 porch for those who would like time out of the classroom. The calm spaces have a range of resources to support regulation.
Regulation Stations
We recognise that, at times, children need tools to regulate and that early intervention is key. Regulation stations have been set up around school with different tools to support calm learning for all. There is a Regulation Station focused around physical activities and another focused around fine motor tasks.
The Cocoon
The Cocoon is a sensory environment based around physical feedback. It contains large and small peanut balls, beanbags, mats, a body sock and weighted blanket as well as a range of smaller resources to support children.
The Sensory Den
The Sensory Den is an environment based on visual and touch. It contains a light table, large lava lamps and a range of resources with different textures to support children.
School Counsellor
Our School Counsellor provides sessions to children referred by staff weekly.
Well-being Sessions
Well-being sessions cover a variety of themes and are led by our Pupil Wellbeing Lead, Mrs Bibby. She takes groups and individuals to focus on an identified area and this may be for a one-off session or a regular slot.
